Hey, Grandma! Facebook Me | You Are Complex. Is Your Password? | Free Music Downloads. Seriously | Don't Call Us. We'll Call You | Protect Your Computer | Protect Your Identity | Draft Security Policies
The Initiative
Through the SecureOU initiative, OU IT is striving to protect students and the University from privacy invasion, information and identity theft, virus and spyware outbreaks, and other pitfalls. Simultaneously, we hope to improve and explore new, relevant technology to streamline the way students, faculty, and staff generate and share information.
Has your grandmother seen your facebook? Probably not. Could she? If she was motivated, you bet she could. Same goes for your RA, instructors, and future employers. You know who else is watching? Your younger siblings and classmates. Co-workers, bosses, and customers. Stalkers and raving lunatics.
And now they all have your class schedule, your cell phone number, and pictures of your house. And yes, they've seen the embarrassing prank you pulled at homecoming.
Recent news about online communities has taught us one key principle: the virtual world isn't just virtual anymore. There is no such thing as "private" information on the WWW. Your actions online can affect your "real life" career opportunities, safety and security, academics, relationships, and legal standing.
SecureOU and Facebook responsibly.

We want this to be very clear. Over 1.5 million songs for FREE. The best part? No strings attached. All courtesy of OU IT.
Sign up with your ou.edu email at http://www.ruckus.com to start downloading today.
Like our Dell University Program and our free anti-virus software, our partnership with Ruckus offers relevant and affordable technology. This service rewards those students already obeying copyright laws and offers an acceptable alternative to those who might illegally download songs otherwise.
We know what this implies. But we're actually going to call. At OU IT, we are redefining this old saying and, hopefully, the way our customers think about service.
Beginning Fall 2006, OU IT will implement Network Registration (NetReg), a fundamental security and customer service tool that empowers OU IT to proactively fight hardware theft, viruses, hackers, and network issues. When a problem arises, an IT representative will contact you directly, shifting the burden for problem resolution from the user to OU IT. This process:
- Increases network security
- Decreases network outages, costly computer failure, and wait time for computer repair
- Protects network connections from access by unauthorized individuals
- Assists in reclamation of stolen hardware.
NetReg associates each network connection with an OUNet ID (4+4) and OUNet Password before granting network access. Practically, this means that, once each semester, OU Network and Internet users must follow a simple automated registration process for each network connection (desktop, laptop, docking station, wireless, PlayStation, TiVo, etc.) to gain access to the Network and Internet.
The process is similar to registering your car with the Department of Motor Vehicles or registering to vote with the Board of Voter Registration. This procedure will guarantee better customer service and network support for users across the OU Network.
OU IT will implement NetReg on the following timeline.
